WORKSHOP

Lucky for me that art is an untidy business. If I were a chef I'd need big splash guards. The worktable just always seems to have some sort of color explosion going on.

Messy aside though it's great to have a wall of windows in the studio to bring in that great natural light.

Three generations of family woodworkers have contributed tools to this somewhat messy looking but productive wood shop. The tablesaw (vintage SEARS 1930)  in the foreground has built three residential homes for this family and now proudly cranks out precisely milled wood parts for use in the art materials as well as the occasional home project. The yellow planer cleans up the parts and insures uniform sizes.

We make our own stretchers using typically poplar from sustainable sources. Reinforced stretchers on anything over 36 inches on the short side is standard treatment. Wood is milled, fitted and glued using techniques designed to create the strongest possible frame. Hand sanding, tweaking and sealing the finished stretchers gives us a very smooth surface to stretch the canvas over.
